CHAPTER 14

Istir, blinking my eyes open.

It’s late. I’m in my bed and Clara is making her usual snuffling sleeping sounds.

I’d thought Ty would have tucked me into his bed, and it’s more disappointing than I’d ever admit that he didn’t. I’m not sure who is responsible for my sleep shirt. It could have been Ty, or I woke at some point, stumbled to the bathroom to pee, and changed out of my clothes into my sleep shirt myself.

The house is quiet and…

No, that isn’t entirely true.

It’s faint, barely audible at all, but I swear someone is groaning. I know who it is.

Ty.

This isn’t a groan of pleasure. I know exactly what that sounds like, and it makes me blush as I get to my feet and tug my sleep shirt down over my thighs as I pad over to the bedroom door.

This is a groan of pain.

Clara is a deep sleeper, so I don’t have to worry about waking her as the door creaks when I pull it open. The rest of the house is quiet, everyone sleeping, so why am I the only one responding to Ty’s groans of pain?

Because we’re mates?

Clara and I are on the second floor. He’s on the one below, so I tiptoe downstairs to his door and quietly knock, not wanting to wake anyone else up.

Silence.

I hesitate about knocking again.

He’s gone to sleep now. Just leave, Martha.

The groaning has stopped, which confirms he must be okay now. I don’t know what compels me to ignore the voice in my head and instead grip the handle and push down.

Ty is on his back, the sheets twisted around his waist, and a sheen of perspiration covers his chest.

I can’t see his face from the door, but I’d swear it’s tight with pain. He’s stopped groaning out loud. That doesn’t mean he’s okay. Far from it. It’s like he’s internalized his suffering.

I remember what he told me about his accident. He said he sometimes had trouble sleeping because of it. Is that what’s happening now?

He groans again, deciding my next course of action.

I step into the room and close the door behind me so the only source of light comes from his cell phone he has charging on the bedside table.

I reach his side in seconds and peer down at him.

His face is tight, lips flat, and sweat beads on his brow. I can’t see into his head to know what kind of dream he’s having, but I don’t have to.

A bad one.

“Ty,” I whisper loudly.

Nothing.

I slide into the bed beside him and prod his right overheated cheek with my index finger. From the way the sheets have twisted around his hips, he’s naked, and I don’t trust myself to touch much more than that.

“Ty?” I whisper a little louder.

He groans as he bats my hand away, but he remains resolutely asleep.

If I yell, people will rush in here to investigate the sound, find me in Ty’s bed, and… well, they might read into things. Wrong things. Especially about the nature of our relationship.
